Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (1967)

A team of astronauts crash-land on Venus, and find themselves under attack by prehistoric monsters. They kill one of the monsters that turns out to be a god to the Venusian women, bringing the wrath of the alien women down on them and making them determined to destroy the “intruders”.

This film began life as a Soviet-produced work. An American producer then added some new footage and changed the credits to hide the film’s Soviet origin. The original film, “Planeta Bur”, is also known as “Cosmonauts on Venus”, “Planet of Storms”, “Planet of Tempests”, “Planeta Burg”, and “Storm Planet”. The original Russian footage (dubbed into English) is superior, with dazzling sets and costumes, and great outdoor and cavern locations that give it a surreal fantasy look. They have an intimidating robot that looks like “Robbie” on steroids, and a cool land rover to get around. Some Toho-like miniatures are also on hand. The Bogdonavich-lensed stuff is much campier to say the least, with Mamie and the babes looking pretty and biting into rubber fishes filled with fake blood.

Director: Peter Bogdanovich
