Learn English with Ricky Gervais - Pilot Episode (2012)

Ricky Gervais and Karl Pilkington have launched their new webseries Talking English. The series, which sees the duo arguing over how best to teach foreigners the English language, launched its pilot episode on iTunes Tuesday. The episode, which is available for free, features Gervais and Pilkington sitting on a set, discussing various scenarios in which English might be used. Of course, its all very silly; no foreigners will learn much from their exchange, due to Karls difficulty grasping the concept of the video and Gervaiss constant attempts to wind him up (which involve body waxing and pretending to be an old man with an anatomical problem).
Fans of the Gervais/Pilkington dynamic will enjoy this little episode, although you cant help but feel that it would be a little better with frequent collaborator Stephen Merchant in the mix as well (hes off working on his new HBO pilot Hello Ladies). The episode is funny enough, though, and its always fun to see Karl crack up at Rickys antics.
This first pilot episode is free, though future installments of the series will require a nominal fee to be purchased. Gervais, who also started filming the first series of his new Pilkington-starring sitcom Derek this week, took to his blog earlier a few weeks ago to discuss why Learn English needed to be a webseries.
I really think internet-first shows are the future, Gervais wrote. TV habits have already changed drastically in the last 10 years and I think everyone will soon be demanding any show they want, any time they want.
They are also global which is very exciting if you have any profile around the world. Or not. Thats what can build it, too. That was probably the most attractive thing to me about doing the Ricky Gervais podcasts in the first place.
